Accelerated Science Summer 2016 Transition

So... here we go. we will use this page to bridge the gap from our 7th grade year to our 8th grade year. The basic idea is to review the 7th grade stuff on your own - SERIOUSLY! You will need to do this! That will save us significant time throughout the 8th grade year. The less we have to backtrack and review, the faster and further we can push on ahead. In fact, there just might be a "pretest" at the start on the year on the old stuff from 7th grade. It will not be overly picky, but you should come into the year with the main concepts from last year well established in your mind. I suggest you cruise on down the Accel Sci 7 wiki page from start to finish and ask yourself questions about the topics that are listed and that we covered over last year. For example, if you see "metric scale", you should remember the order of prefixes - giga, mega, kilo, etc - and remember how to use the metric scale. If not look back and practice it! If you see Newton's laws, do you know what they are? Cab you state them? Or do you at least know the short versions of them and and are able to recognize which law is portrayed in a given scenario? What is "frame of reference" and why is that crucial in understanding motion? Use all the resources from last year to review anything that you think you are fuzzy on. That is the place to start. I will start posting a few new things below that you can get started on for this coming year. Show up ready to hit the ground running!

We have discussed PE and KE. You have looked into alternative forms of energy. To have a basic understanding of energy in general and, particularly, how it moves, you need to know about waves. The following document has some nice links and videos that will help you understand how energy is transferred. Explore the Waves Intro. Then, address the required items on your own paper.
  • You will need to address the following in your notebook by illustrating/defining the following wave concepts:

This WAVES assignment is due when you arrive the first day of class! There may be one more assignment given yet between now and the start of school, so get this done fairly soon.


Let's review and expand of what you know about motion and then I will give you a motion project to work on before school starts. Getting the motion project done before school will also help save us time during the school and will be one big thing that you will have behind you!

    • To follow up on an excellent question in class regarding the complicated task of sending a mission to the moon and landing on it, the video below does a great job of showing the many variables involved in the motion of objects in space.

  • ASSIGNMENT - Motion Essay

    • Write a one page paper that explains everything you know about motion. This should be a well-organized paper with an opening, a body that covers the concepts mentioned below, and a closing. The concepts do NOT need to be covered in the order that they are listed below. The concept descriptions/definitions and examples must be accurate. The best grade will be given to papers that have concepts tied together and integrated with each other. For example, a basic grade will be earned if your paper is a simple list of descriptions or definitions with little flow from one to another concept and with no relationships or integration among them. I high level paper demonstrates an understanding of how these concepts are related to each other and in many ways interdependent upon each other.
